11 PLANTS FOR LOW-LIGHT SPACES

If you live in a flat with little natural light but don’t want to give up living surrounded by plants, these eleven species thrive in low-light areas and will help bring life to your home:

  1. Saintpaulia (African Violet) – From East Africa, this plant thrives indoors without direct sunlight. Its velvety leaves and flowers are beautiful, but keep it away from draughts to prevent wilting.

  2. Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant) – Popular since the 1990s, the ZZ Plant tolerates low light and infrequent watering. Its glossy dark green foliage gives it a striking, architectural look.

  3. Asparagus Setaceus – Easy to care for and can grow up to 2.5 meters if unpruned. Prefers indirect light and loves humidity; use a humidifier during dry months.

  4. Maranta leuconeura (Fascinator / Prayer Plant) – Leaves fold at night, displaying red veins against green shades. Needs light but not direct sunlight to avoid burning the leaves.

  5. Cinta, Malamadre, or Lazo de Amor (Ribbon Plant / Love Knot) – Hardy and low-maintenance. Purifies the air and absorbs moisture, making it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.

  6. Aspidistra – Perfect for dim corners, very low-maintenance, tolerates dry conditions, and can last generations if cared for. Keep leaves free of dust and pests.

  7. Dracaena fragans – Extremely resilient and long-lasting. Adapts to different light intensities and requires minimal maintenance. Ideal for a plant that will last a lifetime.

  8. Male Fern – Native to Asia, Europe, and the USA. Thrives in moderate indirect light and humid environments. Resistant and easy to care for, but needs misting for optimal growth.

  9. Pothos – A climbing plant perfect for tall pots or vertical gardens. Tolerates low light and requires weekly watering. Often confused with Scindapsus, which is also resilient.

  10. Monstera (Adam’s Rib) – Recognizable by its large, jagged leaves. Prefers indirect light and tolerates drought. Avoid excessive light, which turns leaves pale; proper light ensures deep green foliage.

  11. Mother-in-law’s Tongue (Sansevieria) – Extremely hardy, air-purifying, and low-maintenance. Tolerates a wide temperature range and low light, needing water only 2–3 times a month. Ensure soil dries out between waterings.
