On these hot summer days, what we all fancy most is a refreshing dip at the beach or in the pool. If you are one of the lucky ones who enjoy having a swimming pool at home, whether private or communal, here are 10 tips to minimise the risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic:
-
Although the CSIC states that it is unlikely COVID-19 is transmitted through swimming pool water, it is better to be safe than sorry. Keep in mind that it can be transmitted from person to person in the water and in communal areas, so maintaining a safe social distance at all times is very important.
-
The CSIC recommends a chlorine concentration of between 1 and 3 mg/litre of free chlorine to inactivate the virus, and a pH of between 7.1 and 7.6.
-
If your pool is treated with salt instead of chlorine, this is also effective. When the virus comes into contact with salt, it is weakened.
-
Keep all surfaces in communal areas, showers, steps, and the areas around the pool, as well as access points, clean and disinfected.
-
Do not go to the pool if you have any symptoms or if you have been in contact with anyone who has them.
-
Avoid using hand sanitiser before going to the pool. Exposure to the sun can cause burns and skin discoloration. Instead, use soap and water.
-
Ensure that children do not share toys such as floaties, armbands, or any other items.
-
If you are organising a picnic or snack by the pool, do not share plates; prepare individual portions instead. If you bring fruit, wash it thoroughly. And, of course, wash your hands carefully with soap and water before eating.
-
After enjoying the pool, wash your towel, swimwear, and flip-flops thoroughly… and take a good shower.
-
Use common sense. Thanks to the media, we all know how the virus spreads and what hygiene and safety measures to take in every situation. Always act responsibly and with common sense.
